What TerraCast solves for olive groves

The problems that determine oil quality and yield.

Water stress

Regulated deficit irrigation

Olives need controlled water stress at the right time to concentrate oil quality, and deficit irrigation is a question about the tree, not the soil. Soil moisture at multiple depths per block tells you what water is available; a trunk collar strapped to the tree tells you what it took, as the daily shrink and the overnight recovery of the trunk in microns. Stress the trees by the amount you meant to, and see the day the recovery stops keeping up.

Pest

Fruit fly monitoring

Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) activity correlates with temperature and humidity. The AI tracks conditions against fruit fly activity models and flags risk windows per block, so you time interventions rather than spraying on a calendar.

Ripeness

Ripeness tracking

Oil accumulation and polyphenol levels shift through the season. The AI tracks heat accumulation, moisture trends, and UV exposure per block to estimate where each block sits on the ripening curve.

Harvest

Harvest timing

Early harvest for high-polyphenol oil, later for higher yield, the tradeoff depends on your goals. TerraCast gives you per-block data so you can stagger harvest by ripeness rather than picking everything at once.

Records

A season you can still read next year

Olives reward patience, which makes last season's decisions the ones you most want back. Every job stays on the block's timeline with your own scouting notes kept verbatim, and the advisor can recall them — ask what you did about fruit fly last autumn and the answer comes from your grove.

Typical deployment

One gateway. Sensors across the grove.

Olive groves often span varied terrain — hillsides, valleys, different soil types — and that variation is what decides the placement. Nodes go where the ground changes, so an even grove takes very few and a broken one takes more.

Cultivar profiles

Tuned to your olive varieties.

Different olive cultivars have different water needs, ripening curves, and pest susceptibilities. The AI adjusts per block.

Frantoio

High oil content, moderate vigour. Responds well to regulated deficit irrigation. The AI tracks soil moisture against Frantoio's specific stress-tolerance windows.

Koroneiki

Small fruit, high polyphenol potential. Harvest timing is critical for oil quality. Heat accumulation and UV tracking calibrated to Koroneiki's profile.

Arbequina

Early maturing, higher yield, lower oil per fruit. The AI adjusts irrigation recommendations for Arbequina's faster ripening cycle and different water sensitivity.

These are examples. TerraCast supports any olive cultivar, tell us what you grow.
